Runde environmental cente joins
a new EU INTERREG project, "Cradle-to-cradle,
sustainalbe islands"
REC is partner in a new EU-INTERREG IVb project
with about 20 participants along the North Sea
rim. The Province
of Friesland in the Netherlands is project
leader.
The project intends to develop sustainable use
of resources for islands and other societies,
utilizing the innovative and revolutionary Cradle
to Cradle method, which is a new approach to sustainability.
In the products and processes designed within
the C2C model materials are safe for human and
environmental health.
The foundation of the C2C approach is that all
the materials used can provide “nutrition”
for nature and industry, and maximize material
value and safeguard ecosystems. The basic principles
of C2C are related to the use of rules of nature:
eliminate the concept of waste entirely (waste
= food), encourage use of solar energy and celebrate
diversity.
The C2CI project will address the issue of problems
related to the high tourism pressure on islands
resources, like water, enegy and materials, which
has a negative effect on the environment of the
islands, like Runde.
Therefore the purpose is to develop and demonstrate
innovative sustainable strategies and solutions
to meet the needs of islands thereby contribute
to the future benefit of islands in an economic,
social and environmental way.
